Southern Tasmanian Timber Supplier
Hi,
Does anyone here have any recommendations of timber suppliers within an hour of Hobart please?
I'm looking for a place that offers a good range of woods, including imported hopefully, but in small scale. I would probably only buy enough wood for 1 or 2 furniture projects at a time, due to cash/space.
I know from buying in the UK that it is easy to get stung on the prices, particularly when buying only a few boards at once.
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks,
Craig

Craig,
Island Specialty Timbers in Geeveston is worth a look. Good range of timbers to choose from but nothing imported.
I can't comment on prices though.Geoff

Good Morning Craig
I'll endorse Island Specialty Timbers - its the commercial arm of Forestry Tasmania - prices are good and quality is also good. You select just what you want, and they will cut to order in quite small quantities. They also auction very special pieces - look at their website.
Haven't bought significant quantities of timber for several years, but like many/most Tasmanian hobbyists I usually buy direct from the sawmills - favourites include Roger Linnel at Craddock and Owen Musket at Orielton. This means buying rough sawn green timber and drying it yourself, but prices are always very good. My last purchase included huon pine, celery top pine, blackwood and golden sassafrass at $2 or less per super foot. These sawmills are doing it tough with Forestry Tasmania and Gunns making access to logs more difficult and expensive; they need our business! Have a look at the yellow pages.
Another good source is Morrison Sawmill at Queenstown (not Strahan which is tourist orientated).
For most of these mills you will need a TomTom or good map as they are mainly hiding out of town.
Cheers
Graeme

Slightly OT
Roger Linnel's mill closes down soon. He just got his last load of celery top logs to mill.
I must go over a get a load of offcuts before they get burnt.Geoff

Good news, I spoke with Roger this evening and it seems that Forestry Tasmania has found him some more logs so he'll be going on for a little while yet.
Celery top is getting scarce though.Geoff

Hey Geoff and Graeme,
I realise this thread is old and dead, but I never had the courtesy to reply and thank you for the timber supplier information - so - thank you. It will certainly help me and I'm sure any others here who are in the same boat.
I just need to get my workshop in a workable state, and I'll be off to Island Specialty Timbers to fill my roofrack.
Cheers,
Craig

Hi Craig
Take a map. IST is a couple of kilometres out of Geeveston, and may be difficult to find first time.
Cheers
Graeme
