Spalted burl id?
Hey all, i got a small piece of burl wood from off cut bin at The Woodsmith a while back and am wondering what it species it might be. Its a long shot, but i was hoping someone may be able to shed some light on it.

Have no idea what wood it is, but looks like spectacular grain.
I'd be making pen blanks out of it being so small. I'd take the bark off and then cut it into 24mm thick slices and giving them a quick soak in thin CA. Then align the slices adjacent to each other as per the sketch, with each alternative slice cut in half (play around with slices to get best fit/size), and casting under pressure with your favourite coloured resin(s) as a block. Then slicing 24mm thick into pen blanks.

I do quite like that idea, but alas, pen turning isn't really my area of expertise....my plan at the moment is to possibly slice it into veneers for drawer fronts for a small chisel box or something like that ....
Either way i wont be using it for a while. I've got a growing wood stash that i should really do something with first haha

Well...curiosity got the better of me today, so i decided to cut it up a little to see what the outer face looked like. All i can say is that once its all sawn into veneers i should have some damn pretty stuff to play with
On the downside, i also found out that its still got some active borers in it, so after reading through some threads on here the pieces are now sitting in a small container of turpentine for the next few hours.
