    Does any one know the specific gravity reading for common Australian Hardwoods??

    It varies from about 0.6 to 1.2 !

    Blackbutt 1.05
    Brigalow 1.40
    Silky Oak 0.56
    Tassie blue gum 1.00
    Spotted gum 0.11
    Ironbark 1.17
    Jarrah 1.15
    Karri 0.95
    Tallow wood 0.19
    Wattle 0.93

    All the timbers above 1.0 will sink in fresh water. I hope you're not building a raft?

    Looks a bit of both green and dry to me. No way is Blackwood 0.9 dry (nearer to 0.7 and very variable) although tallow is pretty close to 0.93. The best place to look is on the Qld DPI website if you're after reliable info.

    I thought that might provoke a few posts!
    The figures come from Franz Jahnel's "Manual of guitar technology" It didn't say whether the wood was dry or not.
    I thought the SG quoted for spotted gum was probably a typo. SG does vary quite a lot but probably not that much! (especially as the SG of Balsa is 0.12)
