Default Spotted Queensland Kauri - has anyone seen it?

Many woodworkers will be familiar with Queensland and New Zealand Kauri Pine, Agathis species. One form of ornately figured New Zealand Kauri is known as spotted. This figure is relatively common in fine New Zealand Kauri furniture (but not of course the utilitarian pieces like kitchen tables).

I have a piece of furniture with spotted Kauri that the dealer told me was spotted Queensland Kauri. Given that the species are closely related it seems quite likely that there could have been examples but I have never heard of it before.

So - over to you knowledgeable people: Does anyone have any experience of finding spotted figure in Queensland Kauri boards? Photo below (fairly poor quality sorry) to show what I mean.

The next question of course is whether anyone has any available.

I've seen it!!! Only once but yeah... it definately does occur in A. microstachya or "Bull Kauri" that is pretty much limited to the Atherton Tablelands region. Bloke told me once it also occurs in Vanicoro Kauri (Agathis macrophylla) which is endemic to The Solomons and Vanuatu though I never seen it when I was milling up there.

I have a pretty fair idea where theres a log of it too - the one I saw it in had what I could best describe as "elephant wrinkles" in the trunk where the figure was, and I know just where theres a specimen with the same general appearance. If I thought we wouldn't end up in jail...

I have now. Thanks for sharing this unusual timber.

While in NZ we visited an ex-pat Queenslander Alby Hall at Ancient Kauri Kingdom, Awanui, and also Rick Taylor at Dargaville in NZ. Both have access to some incredible timber including the amazing figure in whitebait kauri. (Search "whitebait kauri" in Google) . The Kauri Museum at Matakohe is a must visit site if you have any interest in timber or fine furniture. http://www.waipoualodge.co.nz/kauri-dargaville-museums/

Thanks, it is great to have confirmation that it does exist, albeit rare. Now, about that specimen that you know about - has anyone got one of those invisibility cloaks they can lend to us? No, oops, I must have read too much Harry Potter to my children all those years ago. Well, I hope the tree is living happily with that beautiful detail inside it. Maybe one day I will get to NQ and admire it.

Thanks for sharing those web sites. There were some wonderful and awe-inspiring forests and trees weren't there?
