Spruce plum?
I'm calling hard on North Qlders to help here
THE PROJECT
My old man has a massive coffee table crotch slab he built. Unfortunately it had to live outside for the last 10 at least years. The finish is a blistering white mess( or id have some photos with this post). He wants me ,(I want me) to restore it.
THE ORIGINS OF THE SLAB
Now he calls this timber Spruce Plum.
It was felled from the Northern fringing rainforest of the Daintree in The 80's when the FNQEB (power board) put the lines in to get Power to Rossville. This is the area between Bloomfield River and the Lions Den Hotel if you have ever done the CREB track.
Does anyone know of this species?
Is it a localised name for a more well known name elsewhere?
Is it a rare species and this is why I can't google it?
Any help appreciated

I've never heard that name used for timber in FNQ. I'm very familiar with the area and the CREB track, done a number of survey jobs in there. At a guess it could be Brown Plum (kerosenewood) - Erthroxylum ecarinatum / ellipticum from your comments about Rossville to Lions Den. Not a large tree though. My bet is on either Cedar Plum or Damson Plum, both are decent sized tree to produce good sized slabs.
Not having anything else to go on makes it a real lucky guess.
The "plums" that come to mind are,
Plum Satinash (water gum) - Syzygium wilsonii
Tulip / Burdekin Plum - Pleiogynium timorense
Cedar Plum (tar tree) - Semecarpus australiensis
Brown Plum (kerosenewood) - Erthroxylum ecarinatum / ellipticum - from the Cooktown or northern end of the Daintree.
Damson Plum - Terminalia sericocarpaMobyturns

Never heard of it myself
Pics are imperative
Otherwise no point speculating
Could be anything
Another reason common names lead to great confusion 😕

Super rare, could be. I was reading about one species of tree with only 17 known trees (Cooper Creek Satinash - Syzygium glenum) in the Cooper Creek region in the Daintree.
We still have much to learn about our forests. No doubt there are species yet to be discovered.
ps don't rely upon me for reliable tree / wood ID, I know enough to know how much I don't know.Mobyturns

I thought I might be pissing into the wind without photos. I'll have ask mum and dad if they have an old photo of it. I have to finish the Mrs table and a coffee table to sell first. I guess I was hoping someone had heard of it. I could see how the old man has melded Cedar to Spruce over the years as he is Swiss. Tree came from behind where is the Rossville school I believe
