    Thumbs down Stolen timber!!

    G'day everyone,
hoping to hear from someone out there who may have been offered, or has heard of a large quantity of 150 x 75mm oregon. We recently invested in a substantial amount of oregon which came from an old building which was being demolished in Sydney (near Homebush), and a week ago - the day before it was due to be shipped to Melbourne, it was stolen. The thieves broke into a secured site, hotwired a loader, and took off with over 5000 l/m of 8.8mtr lengths- more than can fit on a 24 ton semi !!. Quite a bold effort I reckon, but surely someone had to see something. All of the oregon has a thin layer of silver paint on all surfaces, and as such is quite distinctive. These guys will probably hide it somewhere for a couple of months till the heat wears off so not really expecting to see it again soon. It is old stuff and has very tight grain. The lengths have all been chainsawed to get them out of the building and end grain is quite pink in color. If anyone hears of anything or has any information which leads to its recovery, we would be more than happy to hand over a $1000 reward, or a 3.0 mtr long x 1.5mtr wide Californian Redwood slab, whichever is preferred.
Thanks all. I know I can count on everyone out there to keep ears pricked.

When we had bushfires about 25 years ago, thieves were coming up and pinching everything from piping to livestock. What sort of person sees an opportunity in a disaster?

I heard that that particular silver paint was radioactive and the thieves should immediately return the stuff to receive the antidote and relevant treatment.

Good point BobL, forgot to mention the radioactive part- I like that. I do have a form of antidote for the thieves however if they decide to raise their heads! Might have to climb into my chipper to get it though

    Hello Woodfalla,
please excuse this thought if it is out of order, however could I ask the question - do you trust the vendor?
There have been other instances of goods being bought and paid for then mysteriously go missing presumed stolen.
On smaller matters similar things have happened as well. I recall a famous investment club that was involved in shares in a racing pigeon with a chance to win a big prize. A couple of weeks before the entry for the race, a carpet snake ate the pigeon. Seems plausible, except for the fact that the exact same thing had happened at the organiser's previous workplace to a different group - same result - eaten pigeon. Seems the same fellow organised the footy tipping comp for the year and the night before the last round, his home was burgled and the prize-money stolen. Hmmm.............
Now yours may well be a robbery, but the sheer logistics of this theft do lead to a bad smell to say the least.

I wish I knew who did the deed I would definetly drop them in it to win that redwood slab!!!

sounds like it was proper old growth oregon if it was tight grained and had that nice pink colour, nowdays it is all plantation timber rarely more than 40 years old and with growth rings half inch or more apart, and as light as balsa!

Hope they catch the buggers or at least work out who they are so that a few forumites can call around to their place for a working bee (if you get my drift!)...lol
I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.

Get your handsaws sharpened properly to the highest possible standard, the only way they should be done, BY HAND, BY ME!!! I only accept perfection in any saw I sharpen.

That's a damn good thought SG, and an interesting read too!

I'll keep an ear to the ground too, but it's likely all I'll hear is ground sounds.
