    Default Storage of Timber

    Hi All,

Just wondering about storing some sections of timber and the best way to avoid checking/cracking.

There are two small round sections of Norfolk Island Pine (I think) probably about 20-30cm long and about 30-40 in diameter.

Do they need to be painted in order to slow the moisture loss down and avoid checking? Or will they dry okay in a corner of the shed...

The aim is to use one as an ilsand bench/cutting station in the kitchen.

    Cheers

Simon, seal the ends immediately. The general rule of thumb is wood drys 1 inch per year + 1 year. So I would slab your sections to about 50mm to allow for movement, cupping, twisted, disco moves etc and machining after drying.

End seal timber (wax emulsion or paint),stack all timber on level ground out of wind and direct sunlight, then let it season for a few years.Might pay to spray pack in order to keep the borers away(homebrand surface spray works well),
