Storing veneers?
Okay look Im wondering if Im doing the right thing with the last lot of veneers I got as Im about (sometime when Aussie post US post and customs get done with it ) to get another package from the states.
Veneers Im expecting are 24 x 10ft x 21in Black Walnut 20 x 30in x 20in Black walnut crotch 25 x 50in x 6in Aforomosa 16 x 20in x 20in Chestnut crotch along with some 50in x 5in Bubinga (unsure as these are an added extra)... presently Ive got 10 or so 5ft x 20in black walnut (cut down to fit) 30 x 6ft x 4in birdseye maple 15 x 8in x 40in black cherry 50 x 50in x 12in Hickory and a swag of others ... Im getting concerned that with the weather changing to summer the cave being tin and also uninsulated and the veneers up near the roof (albeit with a good air gap between) that they may well get damaged bein there
What Im presently doing is probably WRONG WRONG WRONG but Ive not been able to find anything on storing veneers of these sizes only for the small lengths say 12in x 3in which would be pretty easy but Im not about to cut these down any further than what they are and dont particularily want to cut the new load down at all (she wants a black walnut kitchen ) So presently this is what I do... I have this loft I made under the roof of the cave about 2 1/2ft from the apex to about 6in under the eaves Jarrah 6x1s with a 6in gap beteen boards... I threw up a piece of 1/2in ply for a levelish shelf and then put the sheets up on that
As I said its probably "wrong way willy" to store veneers for temperature and such and I had to cut most of the veneers so they would fit... anyway so far no probs with the veneers they seem to be okay up there... but as were heading into summer and if it gets as HOT as I expect it to get Im sorta wondering if theres a better way of storing them
As the stuff comes mostly in 10 or more feet long lengths and some is 20in or more wide so what to do?... make a veneer specific cupboard? say 15ft long by 24in wide with shelves inside for the different specie?... make shelves around the cave? I have some room but very little! (ooh woe I do need another shed/cave!! ) take all the timber in the loft down and put it out with the other stuff and make the whole loft area a veneer storage area? still doesnt offer control some of this stuff are slippery little buggars!
Ideas and suggestions please fellas!! Im havin nightmares of going out there one day and finding a whole mess of tiny thin matchsticks up in the loft instead of this hoard of veneersBelieve me there IS life beyond marriage!!! Mate,
No one replied hey?
Must be because of the ridiculously large amount of veneers you've got. You're making me drool at the idea of veneering my lounge room in Black Walnut... so... where do you live??
Seriously, I usually only have really small sheets hanging around, and can't offer any opinion except "what do the people you bought them off say?"

Ding, it might add a bit of weight, but ........
At least cover the stack with a sheet(or part thereof) of 3600x1220x18(32mm would be ideal)MDF with some bricks(aka lumps of jarrah) to keep it flat. Ideally, place another full sheet of MDF(or equivalent)under the leaves with another sheet of MDF on top, held down tight with bolts fitted with wing nuts placed around the edges. Otherwise, your crotch may buckle(in more ways than one) }:everything is something, for a reason:confused:

yep I was thinking of something like that rowie... but Im thinking more of a permanent arrangement since some of this wont get used for some time and with so much (and more to come yet ) and so little room left in the shed I got to wondering how it was done on a larger scale...
Im thinking of making a cabinet type affair... say 12ft long by say 3ft high with several shelves full length for the longer peices and the rest at varying lenghts width would have to be about 26in wide... shelves say 2in apart sort like those old post office slot things only larger this would keep them mostly flat those that dont could have a cut sheet of mdf or 1in ply slid in on top... this idea would allow for name tags to be laid on the shelves under the sheets so I know what is in there!
Presently its all sitting up on the loft shelf directly under the tin roof... which given that its now warming up I am starting to feel consern creeping into my bones... theres about $900 (several grand worth on Aussie ebay Id guess) worth of mostly exotic veneers up there and brother Id hate to loose it cause I didnt have a clue how to store it properly
What your suggesting seems more like what I do when I actually use it!Believe me there IS life beyond marriage!!! Relax breathe and smile learn to laugh again from the heart so it reaches the eyes!!

Shane, take em down from the loft as quick as:eek: Heat rises. It wont take long before they are rooted.
Find a cool spot in your shed or house (behing the couch would be good) and wrap them lightly in a plastic sheet and sandwich between two strips of mdf with a few weights on them. That will do the trick.
Wouldnt mind seeing some pics and some WIPs when you use them
