stuffed deck
hi there,
got a prob with a deck i have just put down for a client- used 190x42 DAR Karri and deck is set up like a bridge looks good but it has severe surface checking and other splits right through, my thinking is that maybe my suplier has not kiln dried timber - its been down for 6 weeks and now looks about 10 years old - have to look after this cliet as i built his house and he is a good man, so i have to replace all, now i really want to get it right this time round - what timber should i use? needs to be at least 190 wide by 40-45 thick - and the budget per mL would be no more than $30,
any advice apreciated
cheers

OUCH, that must suck!! I assume by the fact that you are using Karri that you are somewhere near Perth. I would have thought karri would have worked fairly well. Before I would do anything I would be talking to the supplier of the timber and provided that the checking/cracking is not due to the way you installed it they should be liable for at least replacing some of it, if not all of it. At worst they should at least help out with the cost.
By what you have written I take it that it is fairly freshly milled timber, and am not sure if you would be interested in using redressed recycled timber, But if you were I know that Freo timber traders used to do a lot of blackbutt and other stuff recycled from the old woolstores and such which would be about those dimensions (If they are still trading) and this stuff would be fully seasoned after being part of the building for more than a hundred years, and should not move shake or split etc.
As I say though approach the supplier and show them what has happened, They should be able to help solve the problem for you.I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.
Get your handsaws sharpened properly to the highest possible standard, the only way they should be done, BY HAND, BY ME!!! I only accept perfection in any saw I sharpen.

I agree, contact the supplier, he may come to the party. Very costly operation. Hope you can sort something out with the supplier.
Reality is no background music.
