On the subject of sticking
Howdy all, I was just wondering about storing timber boards. I have a few racks and a few 'pidgeon hole' type storage areas for my timber but I was wondering about stickering. Im not sure if it is necessary for dried timber or not. Most of the time I see it at timber merchants etc it isn't but that could be because its getting turned over regularly.. anyway some of the pieces will probably be sitting for months or longer until the right job comes along. Assuming everything is kiln dried do I need to sticker?? Cheers Nicko

In my opinion no, its not essential as most of the twisting, warping etc has happened during the drying. As long as temp and humidity in the storage environment do NOT change too quickly, dry timber should be dimensionally stable. These are my views from drying and storage of many wood species.
edit: typo & word added for clarity .. sorry

Yep, what Euge said. The reason for stickers is to allow air to circulate & carry away the moisture as it leaves "un-dry" wood. Once you have the MC down to the equilibration point (which will vary a little depending on the average RH levels for your area/shed) there should be very little ingress/egress of moisture. If your wood has been 'dried' down to the typical 12% or less, there is no danger of fungi getting a hold, but if it contains sapwood & is a species susceptible to Lyctids, paint the exposed ends to keep the little blighters out...
Cheers,IW

Great! Its what I suspected but needed to be sure, thanks so much for the insight. Thats lucky because I'm just about to run out of storage space but if I remove the stickers then ill only be half way again I do like the way timber looks organised and considered stored with stickers though
