Default Sydney wood show- display drawer wood ID

    Hey,
I was wondering if someone saw this at the show and remembered what timber it was. I am referring to the darker timber.
    Thanks
    Andy.

Yeah I remember asking the guy as I thought it was ebony too. But I really can't remember what he said. I think the lighter timber is infact silver ash.

Speaking of queen ebony- I purchased some from the show. I was speaking to the guy and I asked how to get a even darker look. He said mix vinegar with steel wool and leave it for a week or two. Then apply it to the ebony and it will give an almost black appearance. Any one know if it's just ordinary white vinegar? Or brown vinegar... Or doesn't matter? Andy

I doubt it matters but this article says white vinegar

I love the chairs. Its one of the few times I've seen things actually look better after ebonizing.

I got similar information from Australian Wood Review mag and tried it on a lamp that I was making. Take a look at this thread.

    Hi Arron
I don't think there's enough striping for it to be wenge
This picture is what I understand wenge looks like

Sometimes wenge looks like that but usually the long-grain is much closer together and the black predominates over the brown. In fact its often used as a substitute for ebony and was called 'poor mans ebony'.

The black stripes on the doors of this sideboard are wenge - not stained or anything -just varnished.

However I really cant tell what the cabinet is. I just assumed wenge when I figured how much it would cost to purchase that much ebony - especially for a high school kid.

You can get Queen Ebony a LOT cheaper than Wenge
