Tassie timber
Ok, number one son has shifted to Tassie and has decided it would be cheaper (for him at least) to get me to load up the ute with some of his heavier stuff and shooft it down on the ferry rather than freight it down. A great excuse to visit some of the mills/timber supplies and load up for the return trip. I will get to Tasmania Specialty Timber in Strahan and I think there are a mill or two in Geeveston that do direct sales but does anybody know of any 'can't be missed' spots to pick up a few lengths, turning blanks, etc.

Geeveston and Strahan are the "hot spots". There will be other places you spot along the road too.
Lucky you> Love Tas. Have a great trip!!!

Have a look at mills near Devonport too. The north west coast has some great timber and there are unappreciated mills nearby.

Tassie timber sources
If you are looking for top end and rare Tassie timbers Distinctive Timbers in Devonport have the sort of quality I have not found elsewhere, and I have done a fair it of searching. I should point out that the good stuff is not cheap, but the quality is exceptional.

If you're driving from Strahan to Geeveston don't bother getting any wood at Strahan. It's a tourist market and prices are marked accordingly. There's a few Huon mills in Queenstown (the same ones with shop fronts in Strahan) and you won't pay for the privilege of owning some nice Tassie Woods.
I've always ended up getting nice wood at Island Specialty Timbers in Geeveston but there are plenty of other little mills and contacts down there.
If you do end up doing the drive from Strahan to Geeveston make sure you stop in at a place called The Wall. It's worth the visitIt's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Another avenue you might like to try is to get in touch with some of the Tassie shipwrights, they should be able to point you in the right direction. They know where to get good timber.
