Default What Tassie timber is this?

I got this length of timber down from my stash expecting it to be huon pine. When I cut it down into a few pieces (it was a 6m length) there was none of the familiar huon pine smell and is was darker in colour. As it was rough sawn I next ran it through the thicknesser, again no smell of huon pine and the colour that you can see. It is obviously a slow growing tree judging by how close together the growth rings are. It is quite heavy which I presume precludes King Billy and I don't think it is celery based on my little knowledge of it.
    Thanks

Really hard to identify timber from a photo, but it may be Celery Top Pine - Phyllocladus asplenifolius.

CTP is very heavy for a softwood, density of 530 kgs/m3 according to Bootles, but if it comes from the Southern Forests then the density may be much higher - perhaps around 600. It is one of my favourite timbers.

Here's a detail from a CTP chair. It darken with both finish and aging.

Thanks Mike and Graeme. Yes I agree, after posting I fitted a new set of blades to my thicknesser which transformed the results I was previously getting. It now most definitely looks like celery.

Looks like nice tight grain Celery Top Pine. I've been getting some CTP, King Billy & Huon from Somerfly, plus have some from other sources and I'm amazed at the differences in density, smell, grain, even colour etc. Wood is wonderful like that!
