Thread: Teak, or what alternative?

If you are thinking of teak for its water resistant qualities then huon pine would make an excellent substitute also white beech is very water resistant.

Could you not almost use any timber you wanted, with a Norglass finish on it?

I'm thinking particularly of Norglass Paints and Specialty Finishes: Liquid Glass

They also make a water proofing treatment for timber: Norglass Paints and Specialty Finishes: Norseal Wood Treatment I've seen this in person at the TWWS show, where they've got a piece of particle board that had this painted on it, and then put it in water... about 12 months ago. It looks like it went in 3 seconds ago.

I know you aren't looking to use particle board, I'm giving that as an example of the product's potential, and thus the possibility of allowing you to use whatever timber you might want to use.

They operate an advice line, and I can tell you they're quite knowledgeable and helpful.

Not shilling for them, just a happy user of their products.

I will consider the Norglass as a last resort, hoping to get away with a non glassy finish, prefer the wood to look natural. Found a place that sells a teak chair for $49, pretty sure it’s enough wood for two shower caddies!

I should have put this in my post, sorr. They sell an additive you can put in the Liquid Glass that will yield a satin, or matt finish, and it's extremely easy to do. If that's of interest, simply give them a call and they'll advise you on the products you need (I'll be honest, I forgot).
