Works out to about $5000 per cube, did that price include the breaking down into 10 sticks?

Can you clarify the price. Is that a per piece price or overall price. $45 per lineal metre for pine is a rip off.

I recently bought some 200x38 clear grade hoop pine for $15.20/lm, $2000/M³.

    $45/lm seems a bit high!

    Ok,

    the exact quote is for...

    10 sticks of DAR Clear Grade, Kiln Dried 2.4M 240mm x 38mm

Price was $1080 plus GST for Hoop Pine
    $965 for Radiata...

Works out to be $4909 per cube plus GST.

The seems like a hell of a lot of money for hoop. Does it have to be solid or could you use laminated beams?

Seems pretty cheap to me as we dont see too much hoop pine down here.
The width and length in clear is petty impressive too.

I was going to make the modular shop cabinets from ShopNotes number 59.
This calls for 9/1/4 by 1/1/2 for cabinet frames - therefore it could easily be standard rather than clear.

I've asked for a 'standard' quote - but I suspect that I will go with 18mm MDF, and use some stained pine as trimmers etc.

At least with 18mm MDF when I cut my 19mm dados with my 19mm router bit I will get a good fit (I hate sanding the edges of 19mm boards etc - another story).

Also 18mm MDF is about $30 a sheet for 2400 x 1200 so I can build entire double door cabinet with that....

You wouldn't have a picture of what the cabinets looks like? I have never seen a cabinet frames that is 1 1/2" thick

edit: just found the plans (http://www.shopnotes.com/issues/059/...hop-cabinets/).
I think you could easily get away with 25mm thick frames and still have plenty of strength.

As woodbutcher says, I reckon you'd easily get away with ex 2"x1", and you probably really don't need 'clear' grade for cabinet framing, unless you are doing serious "shop" fitting, as in a shop in a shopping centre!

Looking at the plans, the wide boards are then ripped down into narrow boards anyway. The wide AND clear boards are what you are paying a premium for.
You can probably cut the same pieces from narrower boards, or from lower grade boards by trimming around knots. Buy lower grade, and get a couple more boards, should save a heap of $$

    Default Have a look

Spartan, have a look into arakaria. I made a double bed from this and the thick timber was not all that expensive. This timber is slightly harder than pine clears and is good to work, may be similiar to what you are chasing.

"Arakaria" is Aurakaria Cuninghamii AKA Hoop Pine but with clever marketing to distance itself from pine.

I made a double bed from this and the thick timber was not all that expensi ve.

    Regards Mike
Mike, im gonna make a bed from the same material and stain but im just wondering what you used to fasten the side rails to the ends? Im gonna make a king bed and it will be fairly different but must be able to be dis-assembled. I used to have a ikea bed in the UK and it had 2 cross dowels on each end (http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=367)
but your bed shos nothing on the ends, is it something like this http://www.maxilock.com.au/

    Cheers
