making timber last longer
I am currently putting together a timber memorial outdoor structure that will include a wishing well for my partner as her 10year old boy died in a road traffic accident and we can not afford a headstone so i thought i would make my partner this so she has somewhere to go to remember her little boy.
I have been going to building sites and other such places and asking for there scrap timber and pellets(any other places i could try?).I am pretty handy with working with timber and every part of timber will be sanded. My concern is once this has been built will it last the winter weather at the moment without warping, going out of shape and falling apart? Also after winter and so on.
What can i do to prolong this process as long as possible or stop it alltogether? Is there any certain lacquer that i should use for this project?Or any other product that i can use to make it a strong as a bull?Thank you

Welcome to the forums ktm.
A sad event that has prompted this and I feel for yur partner and you.
Treated timber is best and you can keep it going with regular coats if an outdoor finish each year.Problem is most treated timber is radiata pine and may warp and twist.
Recycled hardwood - Scrounged - may be better but again you will need to give it yearly doses of TLC.
Hope this helps.

I made a cemetery cross a few years back, and used Cupressus sempervirens which is the usual type of Mediterranean pencil cypress. It is considered suitable for that sort of work, and used traditionally I believe.
