What timber is this??
This piece of timber has the colour of oak and the flecks in the grain remind one of oak but it has not got the median rays that oak has and it is much lighter in weight.
I'm told it's beech but I would like this confirmed.
The piece I have came from a counter top and is 7 feet long by 8 inches wide and about 1.5 inches thick. No knots or marks in the whole piece.
Thanks.....Terry

Hi Terry,
I'm certainly no expert, but I have been collecting samples for a wood species library that I can use to help me identify SOME woods.
The piece you have there is almost identical to a small piece of European Beech that I have. Your sample is a little more 'pink' but the grain and rays are the same. So that would be my guess.
I will leave it up to the real experts to confirm????
Cheers

Thanks guys, It is a little pink due to the lighting so I guess it has to be beech. Unless of course someone has other ideas.

G'day Terry
You've got a safe bet there with Beech. You'll often come across it in structural components of furniture and timber plane bodies and tool handles as well. Solid stuff and can be nice to work with hand tools. If in doubt you can always type 'Beech wood' into a Google internet search and click on 'Images'. If you scroll through the images you should find close-ups of Beech wood grain that will help confirm your existing thoughts on your sample. All the best...

My search of Google was just the ticket. I looked a many images of beech wood and it confirms it for me beyond doubt that the piece I have is Beech.
Thanks gentlemen for your help. Now to think of a project!!

beech
Probably beech....
To make it stable, it is often steamed, which turns it pink. Unsteamed it is white, but can warp and twist without warning, hence the steaming.
