    Default Timber ageing time

    Hey there,

After the cyclone (larry) that knocked us about up here, we scavenged this piece of red cedar from our back lawn, and i was wondering how long i can expect to be waiting for it to be aged properly? It has been down for around 6 months now. We were going to give it to my uncle so he can turn us some fishing reels

    Thanks,

    Michael

First, you should get rid of the bark & paint the ends with a thick coat of either: wax or 'latex' acrylic paint. This should slow or stop the log from developing splits.

The 'rule of thumb' is one year for every inch of thickness for air drying.

However, a lot of wood turners start with very green(wet) timber and do a 'rough' turn to about 1/2 inch(?) or so over size all round (holes are 1/2 inch undersize) then leave it for several months until it stops warping (or use some 'secret' drying formula such as microwave, metho baths etc) and then turn to final size & finish.

Talk to your uncle about how he'd like the timber - he many want it wet, split into 2 semi circular halves or cut into slabs and/or dried a bit.

The best thing to let it age is to send it to me, that way you won't have to worry about it.
