I am considering using stringybark to make a chair for indoors. Would this timber be OK and if not why not? Thanks

Stringy is quite a nice timber to work (to me at least) and it is relatively hard and stable, however, watch out for the resin rings that it has a habit of producing in the logs, which aren't all that sightly and can draw away from strength.

stringy can have good figure and quite often has fiddle back. as for gum veins iv never come accross one yet. it dose tend to have small holes caused by bugs etc. but this wont worrie you as you will be buying sawn timber.
