Timber FLoating Shelf
Hi,
Would like some ideas on fitting a floating shelf. We have an alcove that is 2.4 meters wide. I'd like to fit a floating shelf in there for the whole width and have the shelf made from Timber. I've looked on various sites that only sell shelves about 1.2 meters wide and there not made from solid timber. I know its going to weigh a fair bit and i realise i will need several of the shelf brackets to fit it. Once its done it will hold 3 lightweight speakers and some ornaments.
I'd like the shelf to fit the whole 2.4 wide and have it about 300mm and about 40mm.
Regards

hey
i just made one of these today actually...
got some 50mm flat bar and welded some 20mm round tube to it. I recessed this all into the plaster and screwed it to the studs in the wall.
I dressed up some 300x90 oregon and drilled some 20mm holes in it and then slid it onto the recessed metal frame. Its stable as, would hold your small speakers without a doubt.
I only used oregon because its light, not sure what you guys have up your way for light weight timber.

It'd be easier to build it as a torsion box shelf:
