Boxwood is the traditional Netsuke timber. You dont need big pieces for Netsuke,

I've got plenty of material suitable for Netsuke - what I don't have are the skills.....
I am always in awe of the workmanship shown on Netsuke, Inro etc., both old and new. There are some outstanding craftsmen (& women) who carry on both the traditional & modern styles of carving.

Billiard Balls are probably fine, at least the old ivory ones. Now I think about it I havn't seen any at car boots, junk shops etc. recently. I guess those Netsuke carvers have bought them all... Just like the Ornamental Turners buying all the old Lignum Vitae bowling balls..(before I thought of it...)
