What timber is my house made from?
I've been curious since we pruchased the house, just what it is made from.
The structure is very similar to the methods used in the Finnish log cabin in a Grand Designs episode:

The walls are solid timber stacked on top of each other.
Some pieces remind me of Sassafras, other pieces Blackwood. But I'm not sure.

We used to have the old mill at main creek Dungog and the kiln was constructed in much the same way. Looks like local mixed hardwood which would include brushbox, bluegum, ironbark, tallowood, white mahogany and other varieties.

Wow, ok thanks. Do you know if there are any other houses around made the same way? Was it common at all?

Just about all the older houses around there would be framed and clad in locally milled hardwood. Lining with hardwood is a bit more rare. The kiln at the old mill would have been lined with hardwood for insulation. I kept one of the side doors and it is made of three layers of 19mm boards, weighs a ton.

Ours isn't actually framed or lined, it is solid hardwood. There are no cavities, the walls are solid timber boards sitting on top of each other.
I'll get some more photo's to better describe it but it is very similar to that Finnish log cabin in Grand designs
