Timber Id
Hi I was given these logs the other day from the Tabulam, Northern Rivers area. Was wondering if anyone knew what it was. Sorry no berries or flowers, but it is a hardwood and smells like sawn Jacaranda on steroids.
If anyone even has a clue please contact me.23376896_806431546211180_318578432_o.jpg23377157_806431606211174_1452822136_o.jpg23432202_806354759552192_1706633570_o.jpg

Hi and welcome to the forum. Colourwise, it looks to me like Mackay cedar. If you search on “Mackay cedar” in the search box above, you’ll find quite a bit of it on sale/sold up your way and you might be able to compare it with those posts?

And it can have some beautiful colour and grain in it if you are lucky.
I have a turned vase a friend gave me from Canada, its about 150mm high and is beautifully turned to about 3mm thick all over.
If you have any spare I'm sure any turners down your way would love a bit, it apparently turns nicely as well.

I think you might be right, but what's it doing in northern NSW? Who knows I guess it is the mystery of life. But I'll do some research into it. I just needed a jumping off point. Do you know if the colour preserves?
Thanks.

Not to me, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't grow in NSW
That was my first thought, but I didn't think it grew here, then Google tells me its becoming a weed further south in Aus. I'll have to keep my eye out.
If it is Box Elder, unfortunately the pink doesn't last, it slowly turns a brown. Dry it quickly in kiln of some sort helps save the colour then use some UV retardant finish. I have my electric smoker kiln for bowl/pepper grinder blanks etc hint hintNeil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Box elder will kind of grow any where as long as it can get enough moisture, that is mainly around the creeks and bush in my area. I second the specimen being box elder
