    Default timber id needed

    i was cutting up some pen blanks yesterday to sell on ebay ,and cut up some sassafrass, or what i believed to be sassy and discovered it was blue inside ,i have never seen this before , any ideas?................bob

    I'd say it's the good old blue stain that afflicts many of the softer woods.

    Sassafras, (Athrosperma moschatum) has a wide colour range, from the plain grey/white to a dark, brown, almost black pattern. Its believed that the darker coloured bits are caused by fungal infections, but I have seen it in so many trees that were in perfect condition that I think it is more likely to be a natural phenomena of this timber. I've seen the glue/grey colour you have here a few times, but its definitely not common. I would expect those pieces to go for a lot more than the regular coloured bits.
