Default Australian Red Cedar - or Mahogany

I have a small, elderly, cabinet which is made - I think - from one of the above timbers.

Can anyone advise me how best to identify what type of timber it is?

    Hi Sikm
Hard with out a photo as they can vary so much. If you are talking brazil mahogany I think it is dencer than cedar depending on he tree cedar mostly has more varied grain,

If it's cedar it will be light to carry and if it's hog it will be heavy but a photo should tell us.

I would also say red cedar. Pull a draw out and test the hardness of the would in a spot that is not visible. If you can dent the timber with your thumb nail (ie the timber is relatively soft) it is likely to be red cedar.

    cheers

I agree with the others. From the colour - made from an old growth tree.
    Beautiful piece by the way.

    Thumbs up

    Toona Ciliata!!

There is atimber from Indonesia called Mahogany. It is very simmilar to our Red Cedar but the grain is denser. Beautiful stuphph.

Brazillian Mahogany ( Mogno as they say!) is a different colourand very straight grained. Bit boring actually.
