    Default Timber ID please

    G'day Blokes & Blokettes,

As some of you may know, I recently made a replica of a Spiers #7 infill plane, and have decided to make a box for it, using this.

I've had this short board lying around for a while, but have no idea what it is, and can't remember where I got it from, so any clues as to what it might be would be gratefully received.

It's of medium density and hardness, quite red in colour, doesn't have any noticeable aroma (but with the head cold that I've got at the mo, I could have a couple of Camphor Laurel noseplugs in and not smell them ). It cuts fairly easily, but when sawn on the T/S leaves not so much sawdust, but rather coarse shavings

    Pics attached:

    Cheers!

    G'Day Major!

Hmm, I think you may be right, as it is quite crumbly when chiselling.

Hi Reeves, As I said, with my head cold it could smell of non-recycled Towoomba dunny water and I wouldn't notice

I took out the colour cast of the pic & it's still too red for Crow's Ash, that's why I called NG R'wood
NGR IS VERY crumbly when you hand cut dovetails... can be a real bastard when doing small work.
    Cheers

    Thanks Major!

We'll call it NG R'wood then!

As to it crumbling, I thought that I'd try my hand at doing some houndstooth dovetails (first go), and also went with VERY fine (1mm) end to the pins. I'm beginning to regret this as I already have some remedial work to do and I've only cut 3 pin boards and 2 tail boards so far - the blasted ends of the some of the pins keeps crumbling off

How does NG R'wood act as a filler with expoxy for the bits that have crubled away? Any suggestions (apart from starting again with Cocobolo, which I don't have anyway )

    Auld,

You might be better off breaking a sliver off another board & gluing it on. I'd then have another go at getting the final shape... honest, you picked a really tough timber to work for fine detail. The only consolation is that when you get it right , it looks FANTASTIC!!
Here is the pic without the colour cast.
    Cheers

Thanks Major, that's exactly what I'm planning to do. One learns, but it might have been a bit easier if I'd started with some Jarrah or R.Red Gum as I'd initially thought. However, my eyes caught sight of the NG R'wood board, and the scene was set...

The colour sans colour cast is pretty well about right.

the pacific rosewood is 'Pterocarpus indicus' and i am not a cabinet maker but those dovetails look too thin for that kind of wood.

I have some nice chunks of it, plus the Solomon island stuff whihc is the same species but often a little darker or more golden. Theres seems ot be no shortage of it at mainstream timber suppliers.

Default A dog's breakfast of a box for the Spiers replica...

After a crappy morning spent at the dentist, I decided that some shed time was called for, so I finished the NG Rosewood box for the Spiers replica.

Not my best effort with dovetails; but my excuse is that the blerry wood just kept crumbling . Still, I persevered at ended up with this:
