Timber ID - Teak?
Hi there,
A bloke around the corner gave me some timber and I'm working my way through identifying it.
I'm thinking this might be teak?
Chocolate brown and planes nicely, though that could be due to my now fabulously sharpened planes

I have some pieces of timber exactly the same as this that I inherited from my father. He marked it as "Leych hard" but I have been unable to find a reference to this. His spelling was a bit average at times and unfortunately he is no longer around to ask. I do remember him using this timber in his joinery business.

I have no experience with Teak, but I understand that it has a distinct smell. Hope that helps narrow your choices down.

Teak should be greasy when planed, particularly the edge on a flat sawn or back sawn board, which is what your boards are.

Any aroma from it whilst hand planning?
My initial guess would be New Guinea Rosewood if it has a "rosewood" aroma, otherwise yellow sirus (Archidendropsis xanthoxylon).Mobyturns

Not NG Rosewood, at least not like other bits I have. But of course even timber from the same tree can look different.
It does sort of have a greasy feel on the freshly planed bits.
