Default Timber ID/ What is worth keeping

    Hi all,

A colleague is getting a tree removed from his house and has offered me to save some pieces before it becomes firewood.

Could I get some help identifying what type of timber it is (some sort of gum i think), and in particular what would be good to grab? (twisty parts?)

I don't really have much space, so i'll only want to grab a few 1 metre lengths of wood.

Primary use would be pen blanks/ box making possibly.

Also could i have some advice on how long to store it before it becomes useable and how to seal the ends of this particular wood?

    Cheers,
    Nick

Can't help with species ID, but for seasoning the rule of thumb is one year per inch of thickness. The best end sealers are wax based products available from both Mobil and Caltex, however they do nothing smaller then a 20 litre drum. A good heavy coat of oil based paint makes a substitute, but anything is better then nothing there.

My best guess, considering you're in Melbourne, is Yellow Box. If it is, it's only good for firewood
