Timber identification
Hello all.
Does anyone have an idea what this timber might be.
I bought it as pickets from the big green shed a while ago.
Last night I was "playing", as SWMBO calls it, with a plane and grabbed an off-cut of the pickets to make some shavings.
I was surprised to see what appeared from under the rough surface of the picket when I planed it.
Pic 1 is the timber in question after planing and a little poly applied and then wiped off
Pic 2 is the reverse of the same stick with no finish applied.
Thank youIf you find you have dug yourself a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging.
I just finished child-proofing our house - but they still get inside.

Timber identification
Hi Ozhunter,
Impossible to be definitive in identifying the sample on basis of images but the colour and grain compare very closely to those of american black walnut which ios an absolute dream to hand plane and to machine if that gives you another clue.

Thanks pete I realised after I posted the question that it was probably a stupid thing to do as id would be very hard thing to id.
As I said it came in the form of fence pickets from bunnies, so the good lord himself probably doesn't know.
It is very easy to plane, a few passes to get the rough outer surface off and a light sand with 240 grit and a swipe of poly, that I rubbed off a minute or two later, only because the brush picked up some grit and spread it across the timber.
I like the look and feel of the result and when I come up with a suitable project, I am going to make something with what I have left.If you find you have dug yourself a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging.

The first picture looks like a piece of Black Walnut and the second picture looks like something from The Cheesecake Shop.
.
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.
