My knowledge of WA timbers is pretty dire, but the pinkish hue and prominent gum veins resemble Marri to me.

Well, I'm in the same boat as the Chief; my knowledge of WA trees extends to about 5 species names. Three of those I have actually put a saw or plane to: jarrah, rock oak (Allocasuarina huegeliana) & she-oak (A. fraseriana). Doesn't look like any of those.

Those prominent gum veins are typical of a Corymbia, and Derek Cohen did a thread on building a Wegner chair using Marri a few years ago. The wood he chose was highly figured, but it was pale & had gum veins, so on those flimsy clues I would suggest Marri too.

But I suspect that is too obvious a choice & you are going to tell us we are both out to lunch....

    Cheers,

A lot of big words there Ian.
It's Salmon Gum. These small bits are from a150mm dia branch. The tree was a victim of a storm.

Here's a photo of majestic Salmon Gums at sunset. Notice the glowing gold refection off the leaf foliage, this only lasted a few seconds. This is at an area named Clampton Mine that was active back in the 50s and has now been re-activated and it returning 60 grams per tonne.

Quite a few Salmon gums have been planted over this side, and they look spectacular for a couple of weeks each year when they shed their old bark.

It's reputed to be a very hard wood, & all those gum veins would make it difficult to work with hand tools, so I think I'll pass on these two bits Rod......
