Some clearer pics of the blank would be better but I’d say it looks like Tiger Myrtle (Nothofagus Cunninghamii)

Looks like a very dark bit of tiger myrtle (Nothofagus cunninhamii), but that's just a guess. How dense is it? Do you know where it came from?

    IanW,
thank you also for your input.
apologies for not adding to first Post but you have no idea how much trouble I have with IT. The timber is really quite a light colour before I murder it. The cup in pic is finishes whilst in lathe with U-Beat EEE and Shellawax Glow, thus going dark.

From the second lot of pics I'm now reasonably confident it IS tiger myrtle. It's a nice wood to work with, I haven't turned it much other than for few tool handles but I've used a bit for "flatwork" like saw handles for e.g.

The only thing I don't like about it is that it's what I call a "slow response" wood. I find when sanding it I have to work through each grade carefully, making absolutely sure all scratches from the previous grit are eliminated, otherwise there's bound to be a few scratches show up when the finish goes on (always in the most obvious spots, of course!).

By contrast, a wood like she-oak is harder to plane/saw/turn, but it sands to a lovely finish easily, I can work through the grits quickly, skipping a few grades as I go & still get a blemish-free surface:

But I guess if you're finishing with EEE & Ultrashine, you've got the scratches sorted....

They are beautiful handles Ian. What is the finish you used on them?
Sorry to hijack the thread but I just need to know.

Shellawax - a couple of coats rubbed in with a wad of cotton cloth as if french-polishing, then buffed with a cloth wheel to heat & set it.....
