    Default timber identity??

I got this washstand a while ago, it has dovetails at the front and back of the drawer as well as a solid piece of pine for the drawer base instead of ply so a bit of effort went into its making. The problem is I'm not sure of the timber the main body and legs are made of, oregon maybe?? The top is very splintery as well so will require a bit of sanding to smooth it out I fear.

the legs and frame are red cedar(toona australis)the top is not original seems to be vic ash or tassie oak. the top would have originally been marble.

    Womble,
is it local? (FNQ) It looks a lot like Tulip Oak (FNQ rainforest timber) but the thing is, I've never actually seen anything other than floors made out of it. It doesn't look like Cedar to me, unless the colour has all been stripped out due to a chemical bath (or a dodgy photo)

If you give it a bit of a sand and wet it and take a photo while it's still wet it would be easier to identify.

I'd have guessed old-growth Cypress Pine myself, from looking at the grain. Not really regular enough for Oregon.

But that's all it would be: a guess. [shrug]

    wanna bet?
yes, the back leg looks a bit dodgy colourwise(photo 3)but the front one is definately cedar(colour/grain/grainfiller commonly used ,as is the panel to the left of photo 1.the vertical grained peice attached to it looks like red pine(sequioa)but i still thik cedar.if the top is original,it may be real oak(quercus)

nah it's not local, I got it from brisbane but it could be from anywhere I guess. I don't think tulip oak, or cedar, it has too much weight to it for cedar I think and the timber seems pretty hard. Someone has stripped it ages ago and left it, hence the timber going grey and splintery especially on the top. I'll have to get that stuff you put on grey timber that restores its colour when I get around to fixing it up.

I attached some more photos, I gave the top and inside of the drawer a quick sand and wet it to try to get more colour. There's also a shot of the front and back dovetails on the drawer too, very narrow pins!

I've added some more photos although I think they might not clear up the mystery, it seems to be a bitzer that's for sure, the drawer front is a dark red colour, the sides are a pale pink and the top a dark yellowish colour...

might just slap some paint back on it, that'll solve the problem!

mm this ones not easy at a wild guess, top looks like maybe wakka or mackay cedar...maybe Qld maple thats just a bit worn...;-)

,,, side definalty looks like the Toona, or red cedar..

If the piece is local Qld Maple and red cedar would be normal and fine..

the sides/base of the drawer will be kauri or maybe hoop pine. only pink in places because it was painted/stained to look like the cedar on the front. probably made c1880. i stand by my previous posts.as for the top, what does it look like underneath, inside the drawer cavity, the colour should be a lot different to the top(not stripped & left in the sun).
im only trying to help i have restored many peices like this.

    Womble,

Pic 4 DEFINATELY Red Cedar - Toona australis, can be pale and the grain pattern spot on.
pic 1 & 2 - look a lot like Blackwood to me although not definite...
