    Default Timber for planter boxes

    Hi guys.

    I am looking for timber to use for planting herbs and small veggies. I want to make small boxes which will sit in a rack, and be filled with soil to plant herbs in them and have drainage holes, so it will need to be weather/water/soil proof, but also not leech anything into the soil.

    I want to make a rack for the kitchen windowsill and then another larger one for outside. I made something similar a few years ago with some recycled Oregon, but gave it a good few coats of marine lacquer.

    For this next one, I'd like to just keep the timber fairly raw, maybe just a good oiling would be enough (not sure on what oil though). I have a WRC table at home that seems to be taking the weather fairly well, but WRC seems a bit heavy for this project as it will need to be able to be moved around by some not so strong people.

    Any thoughts?

    I doubt you'll find a timber that is lighter than WRC with as good weathering attributes. Most things I can think of that would be good outdoors are hardwoods and quite a bit heavier.

    For example spotted gum, which is used commonly in decking is more than double the weight of WRC.

    If you want to reduce the weight, you'll most likely need to make smaller boxes. Or you could put smaller plastic planter boxes inside a larger cedar frame so that the individual boxes can be taken out and moved one at a time.

    I've made planters out of pallets. It's easy, uses a waste material and cheap. Make sure you use a pallet that's not treated wood and hasn't been used to hold chemicals.

    The Urban Bush Carpentry WWW site has some suggestions along these lines

    Cyprus is good for this. Not sure if you have macrocarpa over there, but it's cheap and durable.
