Timber Recommendation for Decking
Hi all
I am looking at building a low deck off the house (260mm in height) and will be 3.7m x 5.8m in size.
I live in Townsville where the temp. is quite hot in the summer and will possibly get a lot of rain in the wet season. (if there is still such a thing)
Can anyone recommend a good reasonable quality hardwood that is not to hard on the hip pocket for the actual decking.
Thanks
Pat

Hardwood decking (approx 80 x 19mm) will cost you about 4 to 6 bucks a lineal metre whereas treated pine will cost 2 to 3 bucks a lineal metre for the same size.....
Which hardwood you picks tends to depend on what you can source locally - ask about at your local suppliers as to what is available then let us knowOurs is not to reason why.....only to point and giggle.

Masara. Cat 1 Hardwood decking (jarrah is only Cat 3) around 3.50 a lineal metre.
Dark red when finished. Very dense. Drill before nailing. If you never made a mistake, you never made anything!

Hey there Pat, there is a good supply of spotted gum in your area. It's generaly used for decking. DC1 in above ground situations. If buying locally you should find it for around the $3.50 L/m mark plus Johny Howards bit.
Cheers

Pat,
I haven't built any decks for a few years now, but Kwila is a good choice although it can tend to split sometimes. Coming from New Guinea, which is probably closer than a lot of southern suppliers it compares favourably pricewise. Lovely red colour also.

I just built a deck with Belian (an african hardwood). I paid $2.90 per metre. It is hard and has an odd smell, I've oiled it with spa'n deck and its come up okay.
