Timber slabs for stairs- Perth
Hi All,
Noticed the forum searching for timber for a staircase so I thought I'd drop in and ask a few questions.
I'm looking for some descent slabs of timber for stair treads but finding some one who has something available is proving difficult.
Heres a couple of photo's to help explain.
The risers are steel and the timber in place is treated pine.... just temporary for the builders to use.
We thought of using Jarrah but again , finding something large enough for the treads is proving difficult.
we need something 400mm X 1500mm X 50mm in finished size
Heres another view... looking down;
Any ideas?

Marri, Karri, Jarrah??? should be able to find something that will work for you over on the west coast in those dimensions depending on where in West Oz you are. Look at local millers, I used Gristone down at Picton (in the yellow pages) a few years ago for Camphor. Good to deal with and nice wood, there were others but cant remember all their details.
Good luck
CorbsIt's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

I often get my timber from the mills, if they haven't got it they can cut it for you but you shouldn't have an issue with this size from the mills
Gunns is one of the two biggies in WA (see below)
but there are a swag of others in the yellowpages under sawmillers
I use the local ones but I'm sure you'd have a better choice up there
cheers

The steel work took 3 months on its own. Each of the 2 risers are made from 4 pieces of flat bar to form the box sections. I couldn't successfully roll a 100 X 200 RHS with out crushing it so the only option was to fabricate it ...which was easier than figuring out the rolling ( mechanical rolling) radius of the helical curve for the flat bars.... and then allowing for a flare between the 2 risers...
Now that was the hard part!
I can share some more 'construction' pics if your interested?

It never ceases to amaze me what people can build in their garage Must be a pretty impressive house you are building to be fitted with such fine fixtures, can't wait to see them in their finished form.

It wasn't really a case of.. (well may be a little) of 'the finer fixtures' more a case of cost.
The builder offered us a boring 90 degree concrete staircase with brick balustrade for around the $8000.00 mark.
So far I've spent $3000.00 for what you see including purchasing and rolling enough steel & stainless steel for the balustrade & handrail so, cost was also a major factor..... not including lobour!
