    Default Timber Sources NQ/FNQ/Townsville

    G'day,
I'm a newbie here, although I have been into the musical instruments section for months. I'm on the lookout for good timbers to get into building some guitars. Can anyone help me out?

Anyone know where any Blackwood, Qld Walnut, Rosewood, Ebony, Myrtle, Mahogany, Myall is around QLD or Townsville? Or any other good timbers for instruments. I'll travel a few hours to get my paws on some.

The furthest North you'll find Myall is Clermont Sam - and there's only a few around there. The bulk of it is from Injune southward.
I think you'll find some of what you're after in Townsville if you make a few local contacts - maybe join a local club or ask the guy's at MIK if they know anyone that can help.

    .......and welcome to the forum

    Thanks treeterrorist,
Got a few contacts/mates into woodworking, scored a slab of silky oak and a slab of jarrah for free, to make a couple of electrics or a table or something. Haven't picked them up yet though. Although one is a furniture maker and the other is a builder, neither know where to get any of what I'm after EXCEPT qld maple.

I went to a timber store that reads "EXOTIC WOODS!" on the on the front window and told him what i was doing and asked if he had qld maple, blackwood, walnut, mahogany, rosewood or ebony and he looked at me like I was an idiot and said "you aint gonna find dem 'ere, we just got pine and tassie oak?"

    Hey Bluesboysam,

Mate I'm in much the same boat as you. Being located in Townsville as well, I'm just getting into woodworking and struggling to find a good supplies of decent timbers in Townsville and NQ. Just posted a thread the other day with a bit of a shout out looking for a few sources (https://www.woodworkforums.com/f14/timber-sources-townsville-north-queensland-64291).

Anyway, good luck to your search! Oh yeah, if you do find some people or companies supplying some nice timbers I'd much appreciate it if you could spread the knowledge

    Cheers,

    WILL

    Hey Brendon,

Yeah no real luck at the moment in terms of a regular supplier in the Townsville area. I've been informed from some members of this board about a couple of mills up north, but I've yet to get the time to get up there and check it out.

I've I find out anything else I'll let you know

    Cheers,

Default Anyone willing to machine used timber?

Guys, I am also quite new to Townsville / NQ and looking to get into some woodworking; problem being my contacts base is zero. Does anyone know some good timber contacts and also some places that would be willing to machine second hand / recycled timber (at a reasonable price)?

    Whitty.

    Default Different timber

    Hi everyone,
I am in Central Qld and mostly a bit far away to just pop in for a visit but if u have no luck closer I might be able to help u out, not so much as a regular supplier but I do have my own stock of timber, some I mill myself or if I find a log or 2 of something interesting at a sawmill say then I buy the whole thing and have the sawmill cut it into slabs or boards which will at times exceed my requirements, I have some mango, white cedar, kauri pine, brushbox 300x100x5+m long and other odd things that I find. Hoop Camphour Burdekin plum

I am currently (once transport is arranged) bringing some Tassie timbers up north, Huon, Black Heart Sassafras, Blackwood, mostly 50mm and thicker slabs x approx 2.5m long, Stringybark with good fiddleback, this will be boards 200mmx50mmx4m long and some 100x100, price for this is unknown atm and until I see it I cant say much more but will answer any questions if I can if u have any.

A few pics following, not complete but it will give an idea.

Can also machine to requirements if needed.

    Peter.

    Hi Guys,
I have a few stacks of timber available in Cairns, about half cube of qld maple boards and a couple of small slabs, heaps of hoop pine and will be doing brown wattle and Cairns hickory in the next couple of weeks. Let me know if any of this is of interest?.

    Cheers,
