Default Need timber species suggestions ...

The purpose is to test 3 methods of sharpening woodturning scrapers.

So I need a species that is

    - cheap
    - readily available in SE Oz
    - medium to hard density
    - consistent straight closed grain
    - and will produce shavings rather than shreddings if you get my drift.

Prob. need a couple of metres of 4x4.

That rules out most lumps of these that I've turned:

    Jarrah
    Tassie 'oak' varieties
    Redgum

Brushbox would be good if affordable as recyled, though the silica content complicates the test.

Spotted gum ... usually has cranky grain? Not seen much of it.

Blue Gum? Never turned it but it crops up in salvage yards.

Would appreciate your ideas for species that would meet the criteria above.
    Cheers, Ern

Why not try a piece of Blackwood (Acacia Melanoxylum) sic. Probably not as cheap as others but hard, reasonably close grained. You would just need to select some with nice straight grain.

    Thanks for the tips guys.

DJ has dropped in a length of Yellow Box which might be long enough to do the trick.
