Timber storage
Hi,
Looking for advice on storing timber. I wish to store timber slabs and carving blocks in the open behind the shed.On a couple of planks supported on milk crates.
Should I cover with black plastic, will keep dry but maybe get hot and sweat. Or,cover with shade cloth, will get wet but have a flow of air around it.
Which way would be best,or should I do something different.
Regards
Terry

Put a steel roof like a carport over it and hang tarps down the sides

storing timber
The first question I would ask - is the timber already dried? The second question is where do you live in Queensland? The advice from this point is vey different depending on the answers.

Whitewood, I have both, good dry stuff and a fair wack of green camphor. location is north brisbane. The dry stuff is Qld maple,Pepperina,Brown beech, little Basswood, hairy oak, Fruitwood and heaps of other for pen blanks.

Direct sunlight is very drying so the first step is to block that out. I also wouldn't use shade cloth as it still lets some sunlight. Rain is no big deal unless the timber ends up sitting in puddles. The you always want some air circulating so the stuff doesn't go moldy.
I like echidna's solution - effective and simple.

Timber storage
I agree with Bobl. However given the normal annual rainfall on the Sunshine Coast I feel a sheet of iorn over the top of the stack help to dry and preserve the timber. Allow more air space below the iorn than between the rows of timber and don't forget to put weights on top of the green camphour to help keep it straight.

I have found camphor is prone to mold so as much air flow as you can get. The good bit is that the mold is mostly goes for the sapwood so generally the good coloured bits are ok.

I have not had trouble with mold in the past. But thanks for the tip,and I will keep a lookout for it.
