You want your cake and to eat it to.

    A very subjective question.

In my opinion the best timber guy does not even have a timber shop, and he lives very far from Melbourne CBD. His stock and range is limited but it suits me fine. That is my view.

    You could also ask.

1- Does the timber supplier deal in endangered species
2- Does he deal from old growth, clear felled, renewable, plantation, or recycled sources
3- Does the timber come from illegal sources supporting illegal regimes - like *Burma/Myanmar* military regime

Most commercial timber yards market a limited range of appearance grades, and in set dimensions that are most profitable in milling the most from the tree. I therefore prefer small selective timber mills that while they have a more restricted stock and species range you have far more choice being able to discover some amazing figure, and dimensions that commercial mainstream suppliers do not deal with. Like slabs of crotch wood, which main stream timber yards will not touch.

My point is that different merchants will meet different needs and no package suits all customers. Some customers have expectations that others do not. You would be hard pressed to find anyone who meets all those requirements.

    My favorite suppliers are:

    3- http://timbersearch.com.au/
    4- http://urbansalvage.com.au/

The only way you're going to find out who is the cheapest supplier is to ring/email each supplier with a list of prefered timber and sizes.

What you are asking here, is for us to do your homework .

You also need to take into consideration, cutting & delivery fees.
    Cheers

    Road side collection

I am not joking - I have collected two cubic meter of Hardwoods - Vic Ash, European Oak, Ironwoods, Merbau, etc etc - all for free, in the last month alone.

However as DJ says - you have to call around - no easy way and then you still have to go out and do the leg work. What is on paper and what is in stock can be huge. Same species, same dimensions, same grade, same price huge differences.
