Does anyone know of any good timber suppliers in Adelaide beside the nomal hardware store. Where you can get good quality wood at decent prices.

    Thanks

    hi goldy,
what are youafter , rad pine & m/made boards or exotic .
if youre just after common pine and boards then go to dry creek builders yard (cavan rd i think) they deal in seconds but are cheap.
exotics , try otto timbers or liemix flooring in pt adel or a1 timbers at handorf ,havent been to this 1 so cant comment but the others are good but yyou have to dig deep into your pocket!
of course the wood show is on this weekend.

Have a look at an earlier post on the same topic.

SA supplier recommendations depend on what you're looking for. I did some research into local prices for Tassie Oak board about 6 months ago. My experience is that Otto's have cornered the market on "exotic" timber (ie anything other than pine) and you can tell that they know it from their prices and attitude towards customers! Also, I think you need to go to their Pt Adelaide site to get the larger quantities of non-pine. I think Otto's is associated with Australian Timbers, who deal mainly in panels.

Liemex were cheaper for Tassie Oak but I think they deal mainly in flooring timber and would only provide me with roughsawn Tassie Oak.

Footersville deals mainly in pine but can supply jarrah reasonably cheaply. I'm planning to get my treated pine from them for a pergola project next year.

I found Handypine/Aardvark pretty friendly and reasonably priced. Depsite their website claims, I found that they don't stock much other than pine. I haven't tried them out on special requests yet.

I'm reminded of a story on this forum about an experience with Bones on South Road. I've found them good for mouldings (good if you're doing picture frames) but they're a bit strange to deal with .
This time, we didn't forget the gravy.

    Hi Guys,

You can get lots of Oregon from most salvage yards but you have the problems with nails etc.

Stan Winchester at Greenwith sells re-machined timber I haven't bought any from him so I don't know what he is like.

    Machined second hand timber:
    Stan Winchester
    Greenwith Road, Greenwith.
    8251 2180

    Redgum slabs Thebarton 8234 9494.

Estate Timber sell Tassie Blackwood in random lenghts to public. They mainly sell pine, but in packs to industry.

    Estate Timber
    College St Port Adelaide
    8241 0500

    Tasy Blackwood rough sawn

    Moyle Bendale
    17 Cheltenham Parade
    8347 2751

Sell a very wide range of mouldings/timber

    Hope this helps,

    Glen

By the way, I don't know about good prices, but Bunnings at Parafield has a good range of Jarrah, and a limited range of WRC and Tassie Oak.

Hio Goldy, when i lived in SA i always used recycled timber and for me it was a great medium to work with,i got all my timber from Gawler Salvage in Gawler and found they were very friendly to deal with and had some good grade oregon and jarrah and some tiimes redgum joists which i made coffee tables from. Now i am in Tasmania and colecting timber from the forests and have scored a good amount of blackwood slabs and sawn planks also some good size myrtle slabs and celery pine and a small amount of sasafras but i never give up looking.
    All the best............Tasman

oregon does make a good second hand wood, I had a old shed and pull it down and saved the oregon, came in useful and comes up great after planning and sanding.

Sooo Tasman - you're the bloke Imre was telling me about. I purchased some of his gear - hope to buy more - the other day and spent ages with him picking his brains - nice bloke.

I hope your plans in Tassie work out as they should be of real interest/value to many SA woodies.

Also on his advice, went to Gawler Salvage and yep, plenty of timber for the recycler - and Jim is very helpful.

So, Goldy and others, it's worth the trip to 3 Potts Rd Evanston Park just south of the racecourse - turn off at the Mobil s/s.

Hope you keep us posted on your Tassie exploits.

    Cheers

Brian @ Burra which has a monster frost this morn.

Just digging up an old thread.
I was wondering how much the market has changed since 2003? Are there any new places for timber supplies, or any previously mentioned that no longer exist.
My biggest issue is that most places are only open Monday-Friday 9-5, which is when I am at work.
