    Default Timber Supply Threat

Down here in Tassie at the moment the work is that Gunns Timber will be converting to only using Plantation Timber and word from the saw mills that cut this timber is that resourses of this timber are going to be hard to get. For enviromental reasons that is good BUT for users of Tasmanian specialty timbers that will cause shortage of supply and higher prices.
Myrtle, Sassafrass, Leatherwood, Fiddle Back Eucalypt and many other minor species come only from our old growth forrests and if Gunns are not logging them this resourse will only be avaliable through Specialty logging opperations (of which there are very few over here).
Huon Pine is the only timber that has a proper management plan on it so maybe this is a Heads Up to the industry to start working on a better supply strategy so that the black market timber opperators don't have the only supply.
These are my thoughts about this issue that will effect me considerably. I would like to hear from any forum Members in other States about any Known supply Strategies that may be in place there.

    Hi Andrew,

There were some Tassie forestry guys at the WWW show in Sydney. I guess I'll know what questions to ask them. Its also time to write to the local member.

Most of the guys from the forrestry that work at Island Specialty Timbers are worried, their jobs rely on timber that is harvested by Gunns contractors while they are harvesting the Eucalypt logsfor the big mills and wood chip.
Now would seem to be the time to start a logging opperation specifically for minor species but most of it will end up in conservation areas.
