    Default Timber type?

Out at John's (Gawdelpus) place today helping pulling down a dead tree. Prep trimming of branches showed some signs of nice slightly darker centre timber and perhaps worth keeping for turning blanks.

Hardwood, but relatively soft, colour in split halves photo (1st one) closer to real (brown rather than red). Timber has no noticeable smell when cut and it died due to borer attack in upper branches, the big ones. John said the tree had small bunched green leaves with small white flowers, but as tree was dead, can only go on memory. Definitely not an acacia nor a pine.

    Any ideas?

A third here? Ask John if the leaves turned yellow in winter and the tree bore little yellow fruits like straight jellybeans. If so then it is almost certainly White Cedar or Melia azederach.

Thanks guys, you are on the money , John has confirmed it is indeed the one.

Not a big tree, but certainly a couple of bowl blanks, pepper grinders and trinket box blanks, and pen blanks. The pen blanks will need to be X-cut to ensure grain is shown to best advantage, long grain cut can be boring.
