Default Timber type for new windows

    Hi everyone

I'm building a new house and have been travelling around getting quotes for timber windows.

I'm just trying to understand the best timber for painted external windows and doors.

I have people recommending Vic Ash and i have others recommending treated pine and others recommending cedar.

all are recommending that I stay away from meranti.

any ideas or info would be most appreciated.

    thanks
    George

Red cedar is the most common as its pretty durable and looks good, but if your painting them treated pine would work just fine(cant say I've seen any before tho).

We mostly do them out of NG rosewood. It's class 1 durability, light and easy to work and looks great.

Insist on proper wedged tenons, not the half-arsed stub tenons that are offerd by some and use quality hardware, don't be fooled into accepting cheap Chinese rubbish.

I'd not use pine in a pink fit, although bunya was used up here in Qld once upon a time for blinds and the like.

please be aware that not all KD hardwood is outside suitable.
Personally I'd follow Exador's advice and specify Class 1 durability -- and swallow the extra cost

if they are bring painted they don't necessarily have to be class 1 (AGD)

True, but we still go that way for safety's sake. A house has a projected life before major renovation work of about 50 years, so your windows and doors have to be able to last that long too. Even if they're being painted,it pays to make them as good as you can afford to and that includes the best timber, as well as good joinery.
