    Not of those two varieties of "Ash". They are quite different species (Flindersia australis and Alphitonia excelsa) from unrelated botanical families, and absolutely no relation to true Ashes which are the northern hemisphere Fraxinus species.
    Pity so many Australian timbers use the common names of well-known exotics.

    Thanks Brian.

    Looks like I will just have to accept Red Ash then, and just note is is different to the others nearby. The bark I guess could have changed as it dried, likewise the hardness, and it just didn't have much colour due to the rocky setting.
