    Default Timbers and values

    Hi there,
Just a question on wood. Would you classify banksia timber as a Eucalypt and would it have higher or lower value than Eucalypt with a fiddle back grain.
    Regards Ben

Not a Eucalypt. I know that much. Don't know about value though. Like anything, its as expensive as people are willing to pay.

Bupton - I can answer one part of your question very easily. Banksias are most certainly not Eucalypts - they are from an entirely different family (proteaceae) from Eucs (myrtaceae).

As to relative values, well, as TL says, the value of wood is entirely a matter between vendor & customer at each transaction! Banksias tend to yield small sections, which limits their application, but they often have interesting colours & grain patterns, which enhances the appeal (hence value), particularly to makers of small, elaborate things. Eucs are mostly heavy, hard, utilitarian woods (great bench material), though some species are suited to furniture (& much that I consider unsuitable gets made into 'furniture' that appeals to many )

The only way to determine 'value' is via the market.

    Cheers
    IW
