I had a bit of luck this morning, that i thought the forum would appreciate....Our company recently finished a building that included two staircases with steel stringers and blackbutt treads. The treads were cut from 280x40 boards. Anyway, there was some left over, and I managed to save it from (would you believe) the FIREWOOD PILE!!!

Now there are 4 lengths from 1.5m up to 3.0m safely tucked away in my shed

I have never purchased blackbutt before, but im guessing that over 8 lineal metres of 280x40 would have cost me well over a grand

This will be used for my bench, or maybe some chairs, but rest assured IT WONT BE FIREWOOD

Those lengths hardly seem like leftovers, good score!

Great pickup!! Stairtread leftovers are a fantastic source of good timber, hopefully for free. All you need is someway of cutting it up into useful size boards and away you go.

    Have fun!

I was thinking if i rip it down to 60/60/140 i could get some pretty useful sections. I would benefit from the use of a band saw to saw the 140x40 down down to 140x20, then that would be a useful size.

Truth is i will sit on it for a while, and wait til just the right project come to mind, to be sure i dont rush in and cut it too small.

Thoughts are leaning towards either some chairs or a bench. I think prolly a bench. Combined with the redgum stumps salvaged from under the house a few weeks ago (not attached ) that has the makings of a decent workbench

    first i gotta:

    1. finish my Rocker Mortice Jig
    2. make Maxie's cot
    3. fit off the architraves in my new shed
    4. paint the shed

    etc etc......
