is treating pine a must?
Hi, this is my first time using the forum.. so not quite sure what im doing yet..?
I would like to find out if using pine as structural post and beams for construction (ie 200x200) needs to be treated if it is not going into the ground?? I look forward to a response! Cheers!

Provided there is protection at ground level things should be OK.
Remember though that termites swarm and migrate to new areas so it is well to do constant visual checks of the areas where the untreated pine is used.

if you are using it indoors and with a physical barrier then there is no need for treating.
i sell a fair bit of pine for post and beam construction and most of it dosn't need treating, except where it will be exposed.
the top plates in my house are pine logs, the house was built 20 years ago and they are still like new.

thanks for the responses!
i would be definetly using a timber preservative/ oil finish with consistant re applications, but is good to hear the life span of your timber building.
I am still trying to determine the Aust Standards for treated/ un treated pine, and what it states about external/ exposed timbers.. with out subscribing ($2k p.a)
