It's pulverised wood fibre. It is used in green sand for metal casting and as a filler in resins.

Green sand is what they call the mix of sand and clay that is used to make the moulds for metal casting. It's called green because it's wet, not because of it's colour. You usually mix fine sand with bentonite clay to make it. The wood flour is added to increase the water holding properties.

Yeah I was just re-reading Gingery and he reckons that the fine dust from sanding is OK as a replacement in green sand. But it all depends on what Malcolm wants it for.
