Tree Identification

Hi all

I am hoping someone might be able to give me an idea on the genus or maybe even the species of this tree. It started fruiting/flowering a month ago and is on our small property east of Warwick, Qld.

This is the first year I have noticed these develop the seeds. And there are a lot of them. A damn lot of them. They seem to be growing in quite significant clumps.

Until now I thought they may have been a Wattle or a Casuarina. But my "Forest Trees of Australia" (Boland/Brooker/Chippendale et al) book doesn't really support that.

I have included pictures of the trunk (bark), seed pods, leaves. In the picture of the full tree, it is the one right in the middle. At this point I have not cut one, so I cannot give an idea of the wood colour.

Mate, I don't know the species from a bar of soap, but I hit my reference books for you.

Now I may well be wide of the mark but it seems to fit into the Dodonaea species. My best resource was Native Plants Qld Vol 1 to 4 by Keith Williams. The closest I could get was Dodonaea Truncatiales or at a longer shot, D. Bilboa.

Anyway it may give you something to investigate further.

Kidbee's on the money. Looks like this subspecies of Dodonaea viscosa. The NSW herbarium entry says shrub to 5m but the Flora of Australia entry says to 15m which means small tree to me.

I will look around for a copy of Native Plants of Qld.

The height issue did cause me a bit of doubt. The images I posted were all rather short samples. I have seen a few larger ones - definitely over 5 metres with good thick trunks.

Since I have so many, I might cut one and have a look at the heartwood.
