Tree Roots??
I have been turning a few tree roots, Black Wattle and African Mahogany. Someone told me that they heard that tree roots can be/are likly to be toxic regardless of the species. Is this true? Any info on this would be appreciated.

G'day.
I've read that your should class all Australian timber as toxic to some extent.
Best thing is to play it safe & use breathing protection & don't leave the dust on you skin.Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

most roots pump toxins into the ground to discourage other roots from growing in the same area. I can see no reason why they would store it in the wood it would be a waste of energy and plants are not wasteful. As Cliff says no dust is good wear a mask.

Dust is not a problem, always wear a face mask, just wondering if the root wood is more toxic than normal "above the ground' timber. I have some promising root wood that I'd thought of using in pepper/salt mills etc.

Errr.. dunno... got any 'good' friends you can try it out on?
Maybe you could seal the inside of the mill to be safe.Cliff.

Stay away from Rhus, Oleander and other poisonous species and I can't see roots being any more of a problem than other wood.
